Tips & Tricks
for a smooth move
We’ve helped thousands of people move, and we’ve learned a few things along the way. Here are some simple tips to make packing less stressful.
Start with What You Don’t Use
Begin early and pack non-essentials first: seasonal clothing, spare bedding, holiday décor, books you’ve read, and extra kitchenware.
- Declutter as you pack: donate, sell, or recycle anything you no longer need.
- Create a “Not Moving” corner so the crew knows what stays.
Sort as You Go – Room by Room
- Clothes: Set aside out-of-season or unworn items.
- Kitchen: Remove duplicates (extra pans, mugs).
- Living Areas: Clear out old magazines, DVDs, and décor you no longer love.
- Garage/Shed: Sort tools, paint, and gardening gear.
Protect Valuables
- Keep passports, jewellery, and important documents in a separate, clearly marked box or bag that you’ll carry yourself.
- Use sturdy boxes and generous padding for fragile items.
Final Week Checklist
- Pack daily-use items last (toiletries, key cookware, everyday clothes).
- Empty and defrost fridges/freezers at least 24 hours before collection.
Label Smarter
- Write Clearly & Boldly: Use a thick marker or printed labels on two sides and the top.
- Include Key Details: Room name (e.g., Kitchen), brief contents (“Pots & Pans”), and priority/fragility (Fragile, Heavy, Open First).
- Colour-Code (Optional): Use coloured tape or stickers for each room and place the matching colour on the destination room door.
- Number & Inventory: e.g., “Kitchen 1 of 6,” and keep a simple list or spreadsheet.
- Special Handling Notes: Mark “This Side Up” or “Do Not Stack,” and highlight liquids or delicate items.
Pack an “Open First” Box
Label this box OPEN FIRST in big, bold letters on all sides and keep it with you (or ensure it’s loaded last and unloaded first).
Include the items you’ll want immediately after the move:
Household Basics
- Kettle, tea/coffee, mugs, snacks
- Paper towels, cleaning wipes, rubbish bags
- Light bulbs, torch, basic toolkit (screwdriver, scissors, utility knife)
Personal Essentials
- Toiletries: toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, toilet paper
- Daily medications
- Change of clothes, sleepwear, towels, bedding/blankets
Important Items
- Phones, chargers, power banks
- Important documents (IDs, passports, insurance, keys)
- Pet food and supplies (if applicable)
